Baby carrying is nothing new–wearing our little ones has been in practice for centuries and across all cultures. Whether you practice Attachment Parenting or not, it’s hard to ignore the studies behind babywearing: from more attentive babies, to crying 43% less than a non-carried baby. Although babywearing has been a time-honored parenting practice, in recent history there have been huge strides in the technology behind carriers. A simple cloth sling is easy and still popular, however there are a variety of carriers to choose from that tackle everything from back pain for mom or dad, to proper hip alignment for baby. It’s safe to say babywearing is a practice that isn’t going anywhere, and the market is actively growing. With so many to choose from, it’s tricky to know where to begin. We’ve done the baby carrier comparison for you.
Here are 2018’s absolute best baby carriers on the market:
Ergobaby has become synonymous with baby carrier, having been trusted for 25 years. We love the simple design of the Original, with an added lumbar support bar, a large zipper pouch, and a variety of fun prints and colors to choose from. You’ll have to purchase a separate newborn insert for a baby less than 12 pounds, but its range extends to 45 pounds—well into toddlerhood. Machine washable, and it’s incredibly easy to breastfeed while baby is snuggled in the carrier. Starting at $120.
We put two Ergobaby’s on the list because, while we love the Ergo Original, we couldn’t make this list without the Ergobaby Omni 360. On the pricier end, this carrier can be adjusted (without the additional insert many require) from newborn to 48 months old. We love that the straps can be crossed in the back—key for easing back pain. There is also a detachable storage pouch included, which is extra handy when you’re out and about and need to bring things along. $180.
Lillebaby is quickly moving up in rank among parents and caregivers alike. Lillebaby makes a variety of carriers, but the Complete is the one we have our eyes on. With six different carrier positions and a weight range of 7 to 45 pounds, this carrier is easy to put on and ergonomically safe from infancy through toddlerhood. Starting at $120.
At a price point that’s budget friendly, this carrier is Amazon’s top seller for its ergonomic design, comfort in carrying, and for its cozy, soft (and warm!) material. It’s handy to grab for on the go–it can be stuffed right into your diaper bag! Note: this carrier can’t be used until baby is over 12 pounds. $39.
The Tula does not require an additional insert and can be used from 7 to 45 pounds, and we love the wide hip strap for support. For baby, the body panel adjusts in three width settings as well as two height settings, allowing an ergonomic, snug position as baby grows. We especially love that there is a large variety of fabrics to choose from–something for everyone! $159.
